Abstract

Electric aircraft feature specific flight performance capabilities. It is shown how this is related to the electric propulsion system. Topics dealt with include the flight envelope, the ceiling and the top speed as well as the climb performance. Furthermore, the flight performance properties of aerial vehicles equipped with air-breathing engines are treated. Comparing the performance properties of both vehicle types shows that there are advantages in favour of aircraft with an electric propulsion system. An analytical treatment of the flight performance problems yields findings of generally valid nature. Additionally, computational results on exemplary cases are presented.
