Abstract

The problem of estimating time-invariant Doppler centroid frequencies from SAR (synthetic aperture radar) data is addressed. In particular, the X-SAR (X-band SAR) sensor on the space shuttle is investigated. To improve Doppler centroid estimates obtained from small azimuth segments by a Kalman smoother along the track direction, a shuttle attitude model is developed to generate typical Doppler centroid histories. These histories are disturbed by the assumed estimation errors before they enter the Kalman smoother under test. Simulated Doppler estimates are shown together with the results obtained by Kalman smoothers with different tuning parameters.
