Pentamethylsiloxalane, the basic member of the penta-alkylsiloxalane series, was prepared from (trimethylsiloxy)-dichloroalane and methyllithium as well as from dimethylchloroalane and sodium trimethylsilanolate. Similarly, Si,Si,Si-trimethyl-Al,Al-diethylsiloxalane was obtained from diethylchloroalane and lithium trimethylsilanolate. A dimeric structure, containing a planar {A figure is presented} skeleton, has been established for these compounds by means of IR and NMR spectra, dipole moment and molecular weight determinations. Physical and chemical properties are discussed in relation to some problems of structure and bonding in this type of heterosiloxanes.
