Abstract

We present hydrogel microcarriers for the adhesion and analysis of adherent cells based on their morphological features with image-based cell sorters (Figure 1). Microcarriers with patterned cell-adhesive regions can be fabricated with varying sizes and stiffness of a cell adhesive region within a recessed region to protect cells from fluid shear stress. We demonstrate the adhesion and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on these microcarriers, in which therapeutic properties can depend on morphology.
