N2 - We welcome you to the 5th ACM Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS), the fifth workshop in its series after WDTN 2005 and CHANTS 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 focusing on communication in challenged networking environments in general and delay-tolerant networking in particular It is fair to say that challenged and delay-tolerant communications have become an established research area. With active research efforts in many academic, industry, and government labs touching seven continents, several topical workshops, and high profile trial deployments for rural communication, public transit networks, and wildlife tracking networks, the challenged network field is poised to have a major impact on the way people communicate. In the past year we have seen the unveiling of several new DTN implementations for mobile handsets and embedded systems, the open-sourcing of NASA's ION stack, new DTN-compatible user applications, and new test systems focused on DTNs. There has also been a flurry of activity and interest in the IRTF's DTN Research Group and some interesting new DTN-focused startup companies. This year CHANTS continues its tradition of offering an early sample of some of the best new research, development, and experimentation in the area. The workshop received 19 full paper submissions and accepted 8. Though the submissions were as diverse as ever, we have grouped the accepted papers into three topical sessions: Social Networks and Group Communication, Information Dissemination, and Network and Protocol Architecture. The demo session has always been a highlight of CHANTS, and this year we plan to host six demos and posters, many of which would make interesting papers in their own right. We are also organizing a panel to discuss the state of DTN evaluation. This is topical, as simulators such as The ONE are gaining unified acceptance throughout the DTN community, and new techniques for generating synthetic traces are introduced. Finally we are planning some very interactive DTN-related activities for people to take part in during the entire MobiCom/MobiHoc Conference. We hope that this will lead to new ideas for DTN applications, and spur more work on real implementations.
