Abstract

The chapter focuses on the surgical treatment of polytrauma patients with multiple limb injury combinations. The two main surgical approaches to treatment are early total care and damage control surgery. Early total care involves early or immediate definitive osteosynthetic fixation but can increase the risk of postoperative complications. Damage control surgery aims to stabilize the patient’s overall condition and reduce the incidence of organ failure but extends the hospitalization phase and increases the number of operations. External fixation is also described as one of the main pillars of surgical fracture treatment, used for fractures with extensive soft tissue damage and for polytraumatized patients.
