Abstract
Various clinical evaluation tests exist for the diagnosis of joint injuries. However, training of these tests on real patients is cumbersome as well as time and cost-consuming. In this paper a multi-modal environment is proposed that supports the training of clinical joint evaluation of the knee joint. A combined display with haptic, visual, and auditory feedback allows a user to touch and move the shank of a virtual patient, while observing the internal joint anatomy and listening to sounds produced by the joint or uttered by the patient due to pain. Various closed-loop control architectures are presented that enable a haptic interaction between the user and the shank. First promissing results from a simple biomechanical knee model, integrated in an admittance control architecture, are presented. The future use of the training environment in the field of medical education is discussed.
