Abstract

Informing oneself about the content of an opera is essential before visiting a performance. For this reason the Serious Game Orpheus’ Journey was developed as an preparation tool for watching Monteverdi’s opera l’Orfeo, offering an alternative to more traditional methods of preparation like text or video summaries. The game features both adventure scenes and music sequences. It teaches the player main musical themes as well as the story and characters of the opera. The story is centered around the myth of Orpheus, a musician who wants to rescue his deceased wife from the underworld. He succeeds in reaching Hades, the god of the underworld by playing a lyre. This means that the music acts not only as means to convey the story but is an integral part of the plot. This provides an In-game justification of the inclusion of music sequences in the gameplay and creates a bridge between gameplay and story. This way gaming world and serious content can reasonable be combined via fitting gaming elements, which is an important factor for user acceptance and therefore knowledge transfer. In a small user study the game’s effectiveness as a preparation tool and the impact it had on the players’ opera experience were investigated.
