Abstract

In this article, a selection of results obtained on the synthesis, chemical properties and biological effects of two of the most extensively explored families of gold organometallics—namely, Au(I) N-heterocyclic carbenes and cyclometalated Au(III) compounds—is presented. Their structure-activity relationships and information on their modes of action as novel, experimental therapeutic agents are also discussed, which constitute the basis for future drug design.
