Abstract
For minimizing fuel consumption in aircraft cruise, it is shown that optimal periodic trajectories with singular arcs for thrust control exist. An analytical treatment is presented for dealing with the singular control problem, and the resulting optimality conditions are derived. It is shown which is the form of optimal trajectories and which amount of reduction in fuel consumption can be achieved. Furthermore, the reason for the existence of a singular thrust arc is considered and it is shown which flight mechanics factor is favouring such a type of control.
