Abstract

Chronic pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas marked by gradual destruction of its exocrine and endocrine tissues. Parenchymal replacement with fibrous scar subsequently occurs. In the Western world, the majority of cases are attributable to chronic alcoholism. The disease process is inexorable, even if the patient stops drinking. Chronic unrelenting abdominal and back pain besides specific complications of chronic pancreatitis is the primary reason for surgical therapy in these patients. Preoperative assessment of these patients, surgical options as well as early and late results of the different types of operations will be discussed.
