Abstract

Among the first and relevant applications of the Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) concept was the separation of p-xylene from C8 isomers mixtures at the petrochemical aromatic sites. A discussion covers the adsorbent ageing effect on the performance parameters of an industrial SMB unit for p-xylene separation; development of strategies to overcome the problem; avoiding impurities to enter in the separation process; basis of implementing model predictive control methods; and extending the sieve life. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2007 AIChE Annual Meeting (Salt Lake City, UT 11/4-9/2007).
