Abstract
The paper addresses the effect of locking on the shape optimization of shells, particularly on the analytical design sensitivities required for gradient based optimization strategies. It is discussed how the reliability of the finite element formulation used for the structural analysis affects the optimization result. A numerical example confirms the theoretical findings.
