Abstract
Under the influence of surface tension plate shaped bodies can disintegrate into smaller pieces. The conditions for this break-up are derived and discussed. It is shown that the shape instability depends on the wavelength of the disturbances on the plates' surface. A modified dynamic model allows to calculate the disintegration time and the spheroidization time of the cementite plates. These calculated times are reasonable estimates since they agree well with experimentally determined disintegration and spheroidization times.
