Abstract
Forward masking of 5 ms probe tones is measured as a function of masker duration for broad band noise and tones. For masking noise durations shorter than 200 ms an increase of forward masking level is observed which corresponds to the logarithm of the product of masker intensity and masker duration. The results for sinusoidal maskers indicate that the great selectivity of the auditory system exists already for short impulses.
