Abstract
The surface quality of hot rolled strip is determined by the condition of the roll surface. The mechanisms leading to surface detoriation were studied with particular reference to the thermomechanical induced stress field near the roll surface, which is responsible for the initiation and the growth of microcracks, leading to so-called banding. Studies on specimens taken from a work roll used in a hot strip mill show the extent of surface-damage. Studies by light- and electronmicroscopy reveal the mechanism responsible for surface detoriation. The conclusions drawn are manifested further by analytical and numerical calculations of the stress fields in the work roll.
