Abstract
Due to the rapid spread of high-yielding varieties the genetic variation of cultivated oat (A. sativa L.) has been greatly narrowed. The preservation and use of the diverse germ plasm in wild Avena species is essential to the further improvement of the crop and serves to safeguard genetic erosion affected by diseases, insects and abiotic stresses. In addition, wild species provide a huge genetic reservoir for the improvement of nutritious properties of cultivated oat.
