Abstract
Three dimensional numerical simulations are useful instruments for the design of hydraulic structures and for fundamental research in case of complex flows. The four examples given in this article demonstrate that computational fluid dynamics allows qualitative and quantitative predictions. Compared with two dimensional approaches three dimensional flow simulation tools require a deeper know-how but they also enable more accurate results especially in case of complex flow phenomena. As shown in the examples numerical research aims to develop algorithms which allow for trustable quantitative results in case of multi-phase flows.
