Abstract

The flow through the tip clearance of an axial impeller has been simulated by a developed 3D Navier-Stokes code. To validate the code three axial and two diagonal fan stages were recalculated and the results compared with measurements. Then, the influence of the tip clearance on the performances of axial fan has been evaluated assuming steady state flow conditions, Finally, the time-dependent tip clearance flow has been studied numerically. It is shown that the used turbulence model overpredict the efficiency drop due to increasing clearances.
