title = "Non-linear density dependence in in low energy kaon-nucleus interactions",
abstract = "The importance of effects non-linear in the nuclear density in low energy kaon-nucleus interactions is investigated using a schematic picture for correlations between strange baryons and nucleons in connection with an analysis of the kaon self energy in nuclear matter. Several ways of extrapolating the KN amplitude below threshold are employed. The results indicate that effects non-linear in nuclear density play a non-negligible role in low energy kaon-nucleus scattering.",

note = "Funding Information: Attempts to explain the recent measurements of energy shifts and line widths of kaonic X-rays from light nuclei \[1\ ] have suffered from a number of difficulties. Part of them result from the fact that, due to the absorption of a Kon a bound rather than a free nucleon, the total energy available in the KN center-of-mass system may be considerably shifted below the K-N threshold ofm K +M N = 1432 MeV. It is therefore to be expected that the Y~ resonance at 1405 MeV strongly influences the extrapolation of the s-wave scattering amplitude from the physical to the subthreshold region. For the same reason the p-wave part of the K-nucleus interaction below threshold might receive contributions from the Y~(1385). Furthermore, due to the strength of the K-N interaction, effects non-linear in the nucleus density, similar to the Ericson-Ericson-Lorentz-Lorenz correction to the pion-nucleus optical potential \[2, 3\] are expected to show up in low energy kaon-nucleus scattering. In this note we would like to investigate the combined effects of subthreshold extrapolation and nonlinearity in density in some detail. For that purpose, we shall consider the propagation of a kaon of given momentum q and energy w through isospin symmetric nuclear matter. The kaon propagator in the medium can be written * Supported in part by U.S.A.E.C.; permanent address: Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Erlangen, Germany Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.",
