Abstract

Chlorotropyliumchlorid is a mixture of covalent 1-, 2- and 3-chlorosubstituted 7-chlorcycloheptatriene in very unpolar solvents (CS2, toluene, THF). The equilibrium between the isomers can be frozen in the NMR spectra at low temperatures. In CD2Cl2 the signals are shifted to low field on lowering the temperature caused by an increasing amount of ionic forms in the rapid equilibrium with the covalent molecules. The temperature dependence of the equilibrium is discussed on the basis of the dissociation through ion pairs into free ions.
