Abstract

The present paper describes the development of a concept for the construction and design of optical signal multiplexing devices for highly efficient and distortion-free switching and transfer of light in fiber optic sensor systems. On the basis of the developed concept, an optical fiber multiplexer (OF multiplexer) for a measuring system with fiber optically guided sensors was constructed, manufactured and characterized. A mathematical model for the OF multiplexer light transfer function was calculated and an automatic adjustment developed. The average optical loss including connectors is around 1.5 dB and the maximum transmitted power is about 1 kW by use of 1000 μm fibers within a wavelength range of 250-900 nm.
