Abstract

Phospha- and nitrogen-palladacycles are very powerful Pd catalyst systems for the Heck reaction. NHC-substituted nitrogen-palladacycles combines the advantageous stability of nitrogen-palladacycles with the steric demand and high R-donor strength of N-heterocyclic carbenes. The new catalysts are prepared by the addition of free carbenes to phospha- and nitrogen-palladacycles. A selection of the new NHC-palladacycles is tested in Heck coupling reaction of aryl chlorides and bromides with styrene. Turnover numbers > 530,000 and yields up to 99% have been obtained.
