Abstract
A coating technology derived by MAN B & W Diesel for medium speed diesel engine piston rings has improved the mean pressure, ignition pressure and piston speed resistance at low ring and linear wear rates. The chromium coating incorporating Al"SUB 2" O"SUB 3" has now been called CK36 (Chrom-Keramik 36) by Goetze. Other coatings are also undergoing further tests in this connection. These are chrome dispersion, plasma sprayed, plasma welded, plasma remelted, laser welded, laser remelted, nitrided, and high velocity flame sprayed metal and ceramic coatings. (R.Hardbottle)
