Abstract
Within an extensive research program strength characteristics of spruce processed in manufacturing glued laminated timber are currently determined. Tests are conducted on board-elements of dimensions used in the manufacturing process. The tests prove, that the variance of the compression strength is of the same magnitude as the variance of other building-materials. The compression strength is affected strongly by the density, more than by knots. By means of appropriate grading-methods including density, spruce with higher strength values and a smaller variance might be processed.
