Abstract

In this paper the origins and the current state of the concept of natural disturbance in ecology are examined. In particular the different meanings of 'disturbance' in ecology are discussed and problems related to the operationalization of this concept. It is proposed to view natural disturbances as one kind of 'ecological events' as opposed to continuous processes. The consequences of the disturbance concept for ecological theory and the methods of empirical research as well as for the formulation of nature conservation aims and methods are discussed.
