Abstract

Prestressing of concrete by means of aramid bars is a suitable alternative for prestressing steel. Aramid does not suffer from chloride or carbonation induced corrosion. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete and aramid does not match which may cause differential movement and thus deterioration of bond between concrete and aramid. Tests are carried out in order to quantify this effect by means of nondestructive testing such as modal analysis and acoustic emission. The results of the first testing series are presented and discussed. Future activities are announced.
