Abstract
Hydro power was an essential base for technical and economic development in Bavaria since there were no coal mines. Today water power still represents 15% of total public electricity production. Discussions about alternatives to nuclear power raise the question of further hydro power development in Bavaria. The potential for this is considered in the light of technical, economical and environmental problems. The historical development of the use of water power in Bavaria is also presented.
