Modulated Model Predictive Control of Power Electronics Transformer Based on Isolated Modular Multilevel Converter

Abstract

Multi-port power electronic transformers (PETs) have been seen as a promising alternative of traditional line frequency transformers in distribution networks. In comparison, the PETs with a single stage conversion have a simpler structure and smaller size than the PETs with multiple stage conversion. However, they are still so complex systems with various control objectives that the conventional proportional integral (PI) controller has to use multiple control loops complicating the whole system. In this paper, a modulated model predictive control (MMPC) strategy was proposed for an isolated modular multilevel converter (I-MMC) with a single stage conversion to improve dynamic performance while simplifying the control system. The control strategy of I-MMC based on PI scheme and MMPC scheme are compared in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The high dynamic performance of I-MMC with proposed MMPC strategy is verified by the simulation results.
