The main requirements for transmissions are a high load carrying capacity and a low sound excitation behaviour, which becomes more and more important with the increasing environmental awareness. This paper showes the reasons of common gear damages und the basics of the load carrying capacity calculation of gears. The influence of uneven load distribution due to elastic deformations and static deviations on gear stresses are considered. Furthermore the reasons of sound excitation in a gear stage are shown. Recommendations to increase the load carrying capacity and to minimize excitations are given. Modern simulation programs for gear calculations are introduced. The strategy by the designing and optimising a gear stage in respect to tooth load capacity and sound behaviour with the help of modern instruments are shown by an example.
