Abstract
Sample mapping on state forest land of the Seeshaupt forest district is used to illustrate a method for inventorying and evaluating habitats on forest land. First of all, an inventory covering the entire area is considered. For each individual stand, as the basic unit, its total ecological value is determined; such is derived from an ecological assessment of the stand itself, census of so-called mini-structures, and evaluation of the fauna. Basis for this ecological evaluation are the following criteria: proximity to natural conditions, rarity, and diversity. The practicability of the method was tested by sample mapping on 13 000 hectares. It became evident that such an inventory is especially effective when connected with the periodic forest survey and management planning. Further investigations shall show to what extent simplifications may be necessary and possible if the data basis is smaller, e. g. for small private forests.
