Abstract

The syntheses are described of the key compounds within the series of the known organorhenium oxides and halides; viz.: trioxo(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhenium (VII) (1), bis [(μ-oxo)oxo(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhenium(V)] (2), dichloro(oxo)(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhenium(V) (3), diiodo(oxo)(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhenium(V) (3′), tetrachloro(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhenium(V) (4), and bis[(μ-oxo)dichloro(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)-rhenium](ReRe) (5). The dinuclear rhenium(V) complex 2 forms a hydrate in the crystalline state having a polymeric structure that consists of water-bridged zig-zag chains, parallel to [0,1,1], of individual (η5-C5Me5)2Re2O4 molecules. No direct metalmetal interaction is seen in this structure (mean value 314.2 pm), whereas the derivatives (η5-C5Me5)2Re2(μ-O)2Cl4 (5) and (η5-C5Me5)2Re2(μ-O)2OCl2 (6) have rather short metalmetal bonds (272 and 269.1 (< 1) pm).
