Abstract
Acute allergic reactions due to altered immunological reactivity of the organism can be elicited by a variety of allergens. Quite different pathomechanisms can produce similar clinical conditions. Of the various types of immunological reaction which are difficult to delimit clinically are pseudo-allergic reactions which are due to direct activation of the complement system or antigen-independent release of mediator substances such as histamine. Among the most important mediator substances histamine, leucotrienes, serotonin, lysosomal enzyme, prostaglandins and substances of the kallikrein-quinine system must be mentioned.
