Abstract

In condition control of concrete structures inspections form the basis for assessing the present condition of the structures, for specifying repair actions and for predicting the future degradation of the structures. In general there are qualitative and quantitative information coming from measurements during inspection. The qualitative test results delivers only statements with "yes" or "no" like the answer to the question whether reinforcement is corroding. The probability of detection (PoD) is the characterizing parameter to describe the accuracy. Quantitative test results provide values with units like concrete cover, which are denoted with mean and standard deviation. The reliability of qualitative measurements is expressed by the uncertainty of measurement. Information produced by non-destructive condition control methods does not represent the truth. When using the information obtained by inspections for inspection planning and for the allocation of resources for maintenance activities it is of utmost importance to take into account the uncertainty connected with the inspection results. Therefore the question arises-how precise are these methods in their ability to indicate the actual condition of a structure and how the precision might be considered in the assessment and further life-time prediction.
