Abstract
The antiferromagnetic structure of Nd2BaCuO5 corresponding to the wave vector k=(0, 0, 1 2) was determined by powder neutron diffraction at 1.5 K. The Cu spins (0.69(7)μB) are directed along the c axis and the moments of Nd (0.81(4)μB) lie in the ab plane. For the magnetic order found using symmetry arguments the symmetrical part of the exchange interaction between the Nd and Cu sublattices cancels. The observed coupling can only be explained by the Dzialoshinsky-Moriya interaction.
