Abstract

The German Cancer Society has certified lung cancer centers since 2008. This is realized using clearly specified criteria that enable a complete holistic care of patients with lung cancer. An important instrument is the interdisciplinary and multiprofessional cooperation of the participating specialty disciplines. The requirements for certification as a lung cancer center are fulfilled by a panel of so-called quality indicators. This system also induces a continuous improvement in the quality of care. Approximately one third of new lung cancer patients are currently being treated in 45 certified lung cancer centers. Due to the engagement of the medical and professional associations, the lung cancer certification program is continuously evolving. Both the number of patients as well as the number of cancer centers are continuously increasing and the certification requirements, as seen for the quality indicators, are also increasingly being fulfilled.
