Abstract

This paper presents a fixed-base flight simulator concept that is currently realized at the Institute of Flight Mechanics and Flight Control of the Technische Universität München. The main objective of the project is to find a low-cost alternative to pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation while still aiming for a competitive high level of quality. The project is considered not to be a stand-alone simulator solution but an integral part of an engineering environment providing tools for design and analysis tasks including higher levels like an automatic support for handling qualities assessment. The same simulation model is to be used for both real-time simulation and offline design and analysis tasks. To achieve these goals, dedicated considerations have been made concerning the selection of appropriate hard- and software. Much attention was drawn to keeping the concept modular and expandable. Besides selection of non-flight-certified commercial-off-the-shelf components and standard software modules, many computational tools have been custom developed. The paper addresses four major issues concerning the overall concept of the simulator and proposals for detail solutions: Objectives of and requirements for the simulator Hardware of the fixed-base simulator Simulation software concept Tools for analysis and design Supporting software solutions
