Abstract

We present evidence to support the use of local potentials for the description of elastic scattering of nuclei by nuclei. Starting from the resonating group formalism we suggest a simple ansatz for separating the dynamics of scattering from the effects of antisymmetrisation. The resulting factorisation of the resonating group equation is equivalent to an orthogonality condition model which may often be simplified even further to yield a Schrödinger equation with local potentials only. The approximation is applied to calculate the phase shifts and resonances in α-α, 3He-α and 16O- 16O scattering and is found to give a good representation of the available experimental data and of the results of full-scale calculations with complete antisymmetrisation.
