Abstract
Lipoatrophic diabetes is characterized by complete lack of subcutaneous fat tissue (generalized lipodystrophy), insulin resistant diabetes mellitus, hepatosplenomegaly, excessive hyperlipidemia, elevated basal metabolic rate without hyperthyroidism. Recently, 'cystic' alterations in the bone have been described as a possible further characteristic. The case of a young woman, now aged 21, is reported; she has had generalized lipodystrophy for 17 years and overt diabetes mellitus for 6 years.
