Abstract

The "Manual of Nutritional Therapy in Patient Care (LEKuP) is a completely revised version of the so-called "Rationalisierungsschema from 2004. LEKuP was compiled by a close cooperative effort between the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the German Academy of Nutritional Medicine (DAEM), the German Soci ety of Nutritional Medicine (DGEM), the Association of German Physicians for Nutritional Medicine (BDEM), the German Obesity Society (DAG), the German Association of Dietitians (VDD) and the German Professional Association of Nutritional Science and Home Economics (VDOE). The common goal of the contributing societies was to develop an up-to-date, consensus-based manual or code of practice for nutrition therapy with reference to evidence-based guidelines for in-and outpatient care of patients with diet-related diseases. Another goal was to develop a framework allowing for the establishment of specific diet catalogues for providers/institutions for medical care while considering specific local requirements. The general recommendations of LEKuP are based on the "Reference Values for Nutrient Intake of adults from the German-Speaking Nutrition Societies and represent a health-promoting balanced diet. In addition to the dietary recommendations of DGE, a mediterranean-type of diet as well as a vegetarian diet are considered to be of equal health value. Depending on disease-specific requirements, complementary recommendations are given to realize a nutritional therapy that represents all measures for the restoration of health and the promotion of patient empowerment. The current manual focusses on the principles of nutritional therapy and guidance in practical care.
