Abstract

Within the study period of 3.5 years major liver resections were performed in two consecutive collectives either by CUSA-technique or by the use of linear stapling devices. The four major hepatectomies were included in this study. A total of 92 patients were included in the study. In this collective 41 patients were resected by CUSA and 51 patients underwent stapler hepatectomy. Age, ASA-classification and extend of resection were comparable. There was no difference in morbidity and mortality between the groups. Significant differences in favour of the resection with linear stapler devices were operating time, amount of blood transfusion, length of post-operative hospital stay. These parameters led to significant reduced costs in the stapler hepatectomy group. Major liver resections using linear stapling devices are save and cost effective when compared with traditional CUSA-resections.
