Abstract

This article depicts the association between social mobility and health. In comparison to men and women who remain in a high position throughout their life, inter- and intragenerational downwardly mobile persons as well as those who stay in a low position showed poorer self-rated health. The association between downward mobility in unemployment and health was more pronounced for intragenerational mobility in men. These relations are stable over time and only minor differences with regard to East or West Germany were found.
