Abstract
Fourier transform laser-induced fluorescence of CNN, A 3Π→X 3Σ-, in an argon matrix has been investigated. Eight new vibronic transitions have been found, indicating that the ground-state asymmetric stretch is 1419 cm-1, about half the 2847 cm-1 value of earlier studies. Reanalysis of the isotopic data of Milligan and Jacox shows that CNN is similar to its isomer NCN with respect to vibrational frequencies and force constants. The new force constants indicate that CNN has CN and NN double bonds and as one of the double bonds breaks the other becomes stronger.
