Abstract

Lasers have been used for many years in oral surgery and implant dentistry. In some indications, laser treatment has become state of the art as compared to conventional techniques. In this chapter, a comprehensive review of laser applications in oral surgery and implant dentistry is provided. Based on a short presentation of medical laser systems, the main laser indications in implant dentistry will be discussed: soft tissue surgery, laser preparation of the implant bed, second-stage laser surgery of submerged implants, lasers for treatment of peri-implantitis, laser in 3-D implantology, and low-level laser therapy and biostimulation. A short look on future developments rounds off this chapter.
