Abstract
A CO//2 laser has been used for bonding plastic polymeric materials. The materials bonded are plasticized nylon-11, polyallomer, and plasticized polyvinyl chloride, plastics used for insulation in telephone cordage. Laser bonding offers the advantage of more uniform heating throughout the volume of the material and the ability to focus practically all of the power of the laser beam precisely onto the area where the heat is desired. The laser bonding process is applicable to a wide variety of polymeric materials.
