Abstract

Amenorrhea is the absence of menses for more than 3 months. Primary amenorrhea is defined as the absence of menarche; secondary amenorrhea follows after at least one spontaneous menstruation. The cause of amenorrhea can often be found by clinical evaluation and laboratory testing in only a few diagnostic steps. Sex hormones play a major role, but anatomic features, nutrition, fitness, and psychological or social factors are also important to consider. The following article elucidates the diagnostic and laboratory algorithm for patients with primary or secondary amenorrhea using a clinical example.
