Abstract
Thrombangiitis obliterans is an inflammatory disorder of medium-sized arteries and veins of the extremities with unknown pathogenesis. Histological examination show thrombotic arterial occlusions infiltrated with inflammatory cells and fibroblasts. Diagnosis is based on the following criteria: early age manifestation before 45 years, acral circulatory disturbances and thrombophlebitis. Smoking is obligatory and is regarded as the main causative factor. The existence of specific serological markers has not yet been demonstrated. Besides local therapy administration of antiphlogistic drugs is useful. If further studies confirm first successful therapeutic experiences, prostaglandins may be effective for the treatment of the disease.
