Abstract

Circular timber construction – designing for reuse. Decarbonisation, waste prevention and the reduction of primary energy demand are key challenges that the construction sector must address. To successfully manage the transition to sustainable construction methods, the substitution of emission-intensive, mineral-based building materials with biogenic materials is of crucial importance. This development requires systemic thinking and action that takes into account the availability and regenerability of resources both in the present and in the future. In particular, timber construction, which has great potential to play a key role in the transformation of the construction sector, requires consideration along the entire value chain. This begins with the sustainable management of forests and the future availability of various tree species, extends to the processing of the raw material and ranges all the way to the construction of buildings. This forms the basis for a resource-efficient and climate-friendly construction industry.
