Abstract

The problem area of time, costs and quality is confronting companies in the manufacturing sector with new challenges on a daily basis. It is sufficiently well known that where product and production costs as part of the overall costs as target value are concerned, these are determined in the earlier phases of product development and production system planning. In practice it is often the case that there are deficits in the fast, low-outlay costing of an assembly system in the planning stage on the basis of product concepts. It is all the more difficult for a product developer to make a simple, fast evaluation of his concepts and the associated, product attributes and characteristics in the product development process as regards the assembly costs they involve. This article first provides information on existing procedures for costing products and assembly systems and then goes on to highlight the necessity for the support of costing at an early stage which can be detailed within the framework of the planning process, and puts forward a new approach to solving the problem.
