Abstract

Limited budgetary funds of public authorities have led to the development of new operating models the so-called Public Private Partnership (PPP) Projects, where structures are passed back after e.g. 30 years of operation to the grantor (e.g. Federal Government) with a defined condition. Thus the attention of all parties involved has to focus on the durability of the structure already in the planning and construction phase. Especially for chloride exposed structures a combination of durability design in the planning phase with monitoring the durability whilst operation is advisable. For structural monitoring, corrosion sensors have been developed, which allow the determination of the depth of the critical chloride front. This monitoring data can be implemented subsequently in an update of the durability design to assess the condition of a structure at the actual date, but also to predict the further development of the condition in future. Calculation approaches are presented and illustrated by a case study.
